Scouting Radio has heard of a tragic accident which has resulted in the death of a young Scout Leader.

In 2007 Scouting Radio reported on Stephen Young a 16 year old Scout who slept in a tent in his back garden to raise money for charity. It started as a challenge to Borough Green-based Quintain Explorer Unit scouts to spend a year between them sleeping in a tent to raise money for charity.

Joining the Scout Association at six, the 18-year-old, from Kent, had already become assistant leader at Ightham Scouts and was Kent Scout County's youngest trustee.

Stephen Young, 18, died on an annual group trip to the Cairngorms to experience his first 'snow week' which his mother, Judy, 43, was also part of.

He died after falling through a shelf of snow.

In the statement, Ms Young said: "He meant the world to his whole family and we feel truly blessed to have known him for 18 years." She continued: "Stephen was a unique young man who has clearly touched the lives of so many people. "He did everything with enthusiasm and lived life to the full. "It is clear from the many messages I have received and those dedicated to him on Facebook, he had so many friends. She ended the statement: "Stephen, you have left a hole in my life that can never be filled. "I am the proudest mum in the world and I will love you forever. x"

Mr Young, was airlifted to hospital in Fort William from Creag Meagaidh in Inverness-shire on Monday but was pronounced dead on arrival.

He had been a member of the Scout Association since the age of six and had raised almost £2,500 for charity by spending the whole of 2007 camped out in the garden of his home in Borough Green near Sevenoaks.

Simon Carter, for the Scout Association, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Stephen's family and friends at this very sad time."

Mr Young was in a group of seven experienced adults, who were walking along a ridge when the accident happened. A total of 24 scout leaders were on the expedition.

No one else was injured.
