Hit & Run kills Cub Scout

imageIn Tennesse, USA, An elementary school child was killed Tuesday night by a hit-and-run driver. The crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on State Route 141 in Hartsville.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol representative said 7-year-old Nathan Allen Denham had just attended a Cub Scout meeting with his father at United Methodist Church and had crossed the street to move a garbage can that had blown from a neighbor's yard. A 6-year-old boy's good deed for the day may have cost him his life.

"Just the thought of it that, you know, some kid had to die because my trash can was blowing down the street," said neighbor Charles Taylor.

Family members were understandably too upset to speak on camera to NewsChannel 5, but graciously told us about an energetic, outgoing and humorous boy. Hugh Travis, the scout executive for the Middle Tennessee Council, said it was tragic the boy was killed while doing a good turn - a basic teaching of scouting. Witnesses said a driver speeding down River Street in Hartsville hit the boy, tapped the breaks two or three times, but never stopped. "Maybe he didn't see the kid but he should have stopped, should have stopped, that was an obligation he had to society is to stop and take care of what happened," said Taylor.

Tennessee State Troopers said they were locating and interviewing witnesses to the crash and submitting evidence to the T.B.I crime lab. Police already spoke with one witness and have two others to question.

Investigators were looking for a late model four-door car, possibly champagne colored. Officials said the right headlight and front turn signal would be heavily damaged.  Officials have asked anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Tennessee Highway Patrol or the Trousdale County Sheriff's Office.
