Ireland: Cub Scouts from the 9th Cork (Bandon) Cub Scout section taking part in the Lee Valley Quiz held at St. Coleman's Boys National School,
Beaver Scouts presented the Blarney Meals on Wheels with a cheque for €190 last week at a special presentation ceremony at the Scout Hall in Blarney on Thursday.
The Beaver Scouts raised the money in the Village of Blarney as part of a Community Project.
As part of the project, the Beaver scouts learned all about the elderly and how many are unable to cook a full or proper meal for themselves. They also learned that all those involved in the cooking of the meals and delivering on a daily basis do so in a voluntary capacity.
They also learned that many of those involved see it as their way of giving something back to the community. The group would like to thank all the very generous people in the village who were so giving to the young Beaver Scouts who were all accompanied by an adult. One of the leaders Lucy Kay said that they were well able to converse with charming smiles.
A very nice line in the Beaver Scout Promise reads ‘I promise to do my best to help to take care of the world’ For any six, seven or eight year old holding the scout flag and promising to do their best has a magical ring to it. As part of their community badge, they have to do something practical and meaningful and certainly the Blarney Beaver Scouts have lived up to that. They can all take a well-deserved bow.
DESIGN A BADGE COMPETITION FOR BEAVER SCOUTS
‘Beaver Scouts Go Tracking’ is a locally-organised national activity which aims to get Beaver Scouts out on the hills for a fun-filled one-day expedition experience. A full information pack will be released at the end of February for Colonies and Scout Counties to organise their expeditions on or after 21st April 2018.
Ian Feighery, National Programme Commissioner (Beaver Scouts) said that Beaver Scouts will be tasked with completing special ‘Challenges’ in the following areas: - Preparing for adventure - Tracking signs - Mapwork - Signals - Leave No Trace.
If a Beaver Scout successfully completes each Challenge on their Go Tracking expedition, they will be rewarded with a special badge. The best part is that this badge will be designed by a Beaver Scout! Beaver Scouts can choose to design their entry on a square or circular template, both of which can be found attached to be printed off and cut up. The badge must contain the words ‘Beaver Scouts Go Tracking’. The rest is up to each Beaver Scout Colony.
The badge designs can include compasses, maps, tracking signs, backpacks, hiking boots… whatever the Beaver Scouts think of when it comes to hiking, trekking and adventure! The programme commissioner said he would like the background to be coloured too!
Fire safety is very important for all scout groups regardless of ages. This week we will just have a look at some programme ideas for the Macaomh/Cub Scouts sections.
A good idea would be to start with a visit a fire station and talk with a firefighter. They are normally very receptive to groups who have arranged a visit and will bring them through many possibilities that may occur. There is nothing this age group of nine, ten and eleven years would like more than being able to don a firefighter's helmet and climb aboard a fire engine.
Another good idea is to take part in a fire drill at one of your weekly meetings. A preset alarm clock is always a good signal to vacate the hall in an orderly fashion. It is also important to find out why it’s important to use smoke alarms.
Also, know how to test one and change the batteries. A good idea to go through possible dangers at home or your meeting place that could start a fire. Might be a nice idea to have little competition for each to draw a poster about keeping a campfire safe for everyone
The Lough Scout Group are holding their annual table quiz next Friday evening at Cissie Youngs Pub, Bandon Road with the first round of questions timed for 8.30pm.
Mike Phillips and Aoife Rigney have assured that it will be a very enjoyable evening and a chance for former scouts to meet up and take a few tables along with good parents support. There will be a raffle with some nice prizes along with a few novelty ones as well.
